So our Redhawks have started the season with a record of 2-4. They have looked good in some games and terrible in others. The question is what does the rest of the season hold for these guys? Will they improve and find their grove? Or will they continue to play bad basketball and sleepwalk through the next few months?
I have some extra time on my hands tonight, so I figured that I'll take a look at the schedule the rest of the way and try to come up with a final record for the squad.
VS. Idaho 12-11: W Redhawks are able to pull this one out, albeit barely. We beat the Vandals last year and I frankly think this team is nothing special. Playing the game in the Key doesn't hurt either.
@ Arkansas St. 12-14: W This is an awful long way to travel for our boys, but I think we have a deeper team then the Redwolves. (What's up with the 'Red' animal mascots anyways?) We'll be able to out run these guys. They'll try to slow the game down but we'll outrun them.
@ Utah St. 12-17: L In a match-up of future WAC opponents USU overpowers SU. Utah St. has been the cream of the crop for the WAC in recent years and it will be interesting to see how our guys handle the adversity of playing a game in their house. I just cannot picture a scenario that has SU pulling this one out. We arent on their level yet. Yet...
VS Virginia 12-21: L Aww yes, Virginia. This team has to have revenge on their minds given the way they played against us last year. I still cant really believe that we went into ACC country and game away with a Dub. The thing is that Virginia was never even really in this game last year. We lead basically the entire game and simply played out of our minds. We're gonna have to bottle some of that magic to get a similar result this year. I dont see it happening though. Virginia and Tony Bennett come to the Key and take this one, led by a kid from my favorite vacation spot. (Who woulda thunk that there are any hoopers in Chelan?!)
VS Nebraska-Omaha 12-29: W This Nebraska team is also making the progression to D1 just like we are. Granted I think they are a little behind us Redhawks at this point. They have beaten a few legit D1 teams but that does not happen tonight.
VS San Jose St. 12-30: W Another night another victory for the Redhawks as they play the second game in the Elgin Baylor (so called) Classic. Heard the odds out of Vegas are 1-500 that he makes an appearance at showcase named after him. What a proud alum! Anyways, this San Jose St. team is not as good as they were last year when they smacked us. Maybe wishful thinking, but I see a win here against another future WAC team.
@ Utah Valley University 1-7: L The Redhawks traveled to Orem last year and laid an egg. I see a similar type game happening on this night. They are a tough, gritty team that wears you down after awhile.
@ Washington 1-10: W Redhawks win in the land of purple and gold!!!! Sike. We get ran out of the building. Granted not as bad as it was a few years ago when we rocked those god awful uni's. This Udub team has struggled at points early in the season but played really well last night against Marquette and always really tough to beat at home. When watching UW play however, try to picture that type of player wearing the red and black. That is the type of team Dollar wants to build here. He loves the long and athletic type of players that constantly create match-up problems. We'll be there eventually, but not this year. Another blow out in the city rivalry for the dawgs.
VS Utah Valley University 1-13: W Hey! It's these guys again. Yes I did have us losing at UVU, but things change when our guys get their traditional buca de beppo in their stomachs before this home. I am basically banking on the SU coaching staff to the make the adjustments from game 1 to game 2 between these two schools. Hopefully I am right about this one.
VS Eastern Washington University 1-16: W This Eastern team lost their best player to transfer ( Glen Dean to Utah) but they still have some talent. Under the leadership of their new coaching staff they are off to a solid 4-3 start. Not the best, but better then where we're at currently. This may be a little optimistic, but I think we can pull this one out too. We have the athletes this year to hand with just about anyone.
VS Utah State 1-19: L The Aggies make their first trip up to Seattle on this night to check out what it is like to play in the (hopefully) future site of the WAC conference tourney! They enjoy the feel of the Key and easily beat us after a hot start from the Redhawks. Hopefully the Key is rocking this night. And not just during ice cream and cake time...
@ UC Irvine 1-24: L It is never easy to win on the road, no matter who you are playing. The Redhawks learn this lesson tonight as they lose to a less talented UC Irvine team. I could not believe that we lost to these bums last year, and I'll be saying the same thing this time too. Maybe im wrong though right?
VS Arkansas St 2-4: W This is the point of the season when teams that are not playing well and have had a tough season up until this point really start to fall off. I plan on that team being the Redwolves. With not much to play for they come up here and just enjoy seeing the space needle and having some delicious seafood.
@ Idaho 2-7: L Our so called shooters are not able to find the proper sight lines or the bottom of bucket in this one while playing in the spacious Kibbie Dome. I still cant believe they play basketball games in this place. It is the weirdest thing. Seriously, go check out a game at this place if you ever find yourself in Pullman-Moscow area. Not sure why you would be there, but here I don't judge.
@ Longwood University 2-11: L What? Never heard of Longwood? Well the school is located in Farmville, Virginia and this should actually be a good game. The Lancer's have a great big man named Antwan Carter who simply out works everyone he goes up against despite being 6-6. This is not a good sign for the Redhawks as I have yet to see a pure "hardhat" type player on the roster who could handle this guy. Long way to go to lose this one. What is up with all this games in the eastern time zone anyways?
VS Northwest University 2-14: W Yes! Another for sure victory for us! In case you were wondering these games against NAIA schools do count on a record because we are still considered a school that is transferring to the D1 level. We could actually play 4 a year but I think 2 is just fine. Who doesn't like a little confidence boost right?
VS Pepperdine 2-16: L As much as I'd love to get a win against a WCC school, I still Pepp. as a better team at this point. They beat us pretty well last year even though Sporty Carter shot the lights out. We're going to need another super individual performance to win this one.
VS UC Davis 2-20: W This team is terrible. I'll keep it simple on this one, SU rolls.
@ Fresno St. 2-23: L While their resume may not be too impressive at this point of the season I know this team has some talent. I was able to see it first hand last year when they overwhelmed us with their athletic ability. It was in my opinion, the worst game of the season last year. I do not see quite as bad of game this year, but we still are not able to win this one.
VS Longwood 2-29: W Leap Day! Hey maybe it means good luck for the leapers on SU. I see a few huge jams from Clarence Trent and Allen Tate in this one. Coach Dollar also chews out the bigs for how poorly they played against Longwood's Carter last time. I predict some really physical post drills in practice this week. All of it adds up to a Redhawk victory.
VS Portland State 3-10: W Senior Night. Last game of the season. This all spells out for a major game for my man A.B.! Aaron Broussard goes off in this game and proves that it was a mistake when we lost to these guys in the first game of the year. By this point of the season each team has completely changed, us for the better.
So there it is. The entire season in a nutshell. I came up with a final record of 13-14. This obviously will not be good enough to make any of the post season tourneys but it is a better record then last year. Is 13-14 good enough for you? What are your thoughts? Predictions? Where did I screw up?
Go Redhawks!
